Hey Brian!
Hello Mobile Beat Las Vegas, Goodbye Riviera!

For this month’s “Hey Brian!” I wanted to give a report of my trip to Mobile Beat Las Vegas. There seemed to be an excitement in the air at the show. Maybe it had to do with the yearly gathering of DJs and industry friends, or maybe it had to do with the cool talents of DJ Jazzy Jeff and Sir Mix-a-Lot performing at the show. Either way, it was a fun, and very quick couple of days to visit with DJs, talk gear, meet new people, and of course, talk shop and break bread with old friends.

This is the last time the show will be at the Riviera Hotel and Casino. In May, the Riviera will be closed and destroyed. Future plans for this historic desert landmark have to do with the expansion of the Las Vegas Convention Center. There was a bit of a strange feeling walking down the halls knowing it would be my last. This hotel has a “real” Vegas legacy. It opened in 1955 and has been the host to Hollywood royalty from the 1950’s to 1980’s. And, for ADJ, it’s been the host of some of our most memorable Customer Appreciation Parties up at the “Top of the Riv!”

The ADJ Customer Appreciation parties have been a key event at Mobile Beat Las Vegas over the years. We’ve had guests such as Cupid doing “The Cupid Shuffle”, DJ Kool giving us an amazing party set, Daddy Black of 95 South, Thrill Da Playa & Mike Mike of 69 Boys, a fabulous vocal set from Crystal Waters and a great live band experience from Digital Underground. Needless to say, ADJ has a great history of entertaining at The Riv!

This year at Mobile Beat, we offered five Live Learning seminars that helped provide product knowledge to working DJs. Our very own Marco Oceguera, Edgar Bernal and Arnoldo Offermann spoke on topics such as: Truss 101, HEX LEDs, new features of the myDMX 2.0 software, Wireless Uplighting and KlingNet/LED Master software. We had a prize drawing for anyone that stayed for the seminars. The drawing was held on the last day of the show. Congratulations to our first place winner, Heidi Schroeter Velez (from Philadelphia, PA) for winning a Global Truss America glow totem set, ADJ V-Bar Pak and an ADJ V-Par Pak. Mark Freda (West Milford, NJ), who was seriously thinking about buying an Event Facade, won the second place prize of ADJ Event Facade TT (Hey Mark, with luck like that, you should go play the New Jersey lottery - LOL). And, the third place winner was Sara Navis, of Holland, MI, who one an American Audio 19 MXR Controller.

As far as gear goes, ADJ did not disappoint. Edgar Bernal programmed a great lightshow, so DJs could see what the lighting looks like in a real world application. Between the lightshow and the Live Learning Seminars, the ADJ booth stayed packed the entire show.

There were three products that I thought brought the most attention to visitors of the ADJ booth. First, was the American Audio, ELS Go Series battery powered speakers. We started demoing these speakers at NAMM in January. They are perfect for backyard parties, picnics in the park, and give new entertainment possibilities allowing them to be put in places where you would have been restricted to running power. Then there was the ADJ Inno Pocket Fusion Barrel Scanner/laser hybrid. This new member of the Pocket Series is the perfect “mobile friendly” lighting fixture that is compact, light weight and gives exciting effects that sprays LED color beams and green laser beams safely around a room. Last, but not least, was the 5P HEX LED Par. This was the first time that some of the mobile DJs saw the new HEX Series Pars. The 5P HEX is a great value for your money. It’s compact, super bright and offers the ADJ 6-color HEX LED. It’s all about versatility with the 5P HEX. I like that you can use it for a glow party one night, then warm truss with a hot pink the next night. The 5P Hex should be in every mobile entertainers lighting arsenal.

In addition, it was great to see old friends at Mobile Beat. It was the last of the “famous international tamale parties” put on by Mauro Luna. It was great to catch up with guys like Tony D., Johnathan “Ellaskins” Lewis, Brian S. Redd, Sparky B, Mikey Mike and Jay Brannan. Oh, and thanks to the Brits, Andi Crampton and Nigel Harward for bringing new the English chocolates!

Lastly, congratulations to John Young of the Disc Jockey News for being inducted into the Mobile Beat Hall of Fame!!! John is one of the nicest guys in the industry. Well deserved!
